Hailing from Southeast London, new Kitsune protégés Chew Lips have already earned the praise of BBC music honcho Steve Lamacq, who bestowed them with his big tip for 2009 and even cited their demo as the best he heard in 2008. It’s a good thing they’re prolific then: no less than 10 songs came out of the band’s first rehearsal.
In 2005 lead singer Tigs – whose vocals have been compared to Beth Ditto and Karen O.– was in the process of recording her debut solo album for Loog Records but when that fell through, she vanished without a trace. Now she’s resurfaced with band members Will Sanderson and James Watkins, a new sound and completely new style.
The trio’s debut single “Solo” has already been released on Kitsune, and their second single “Salt Air” will be ready for a July 27 release, along with remixes from French newcomers? Jupiter, Ireland’s exciting Two Door Cinema Club and upcoming UK duo Dekker and Johan.
In the future, Chew Lips might be thrown into the same category as emotional synth popsters La Roux and Little Boots, but at the moment they appear to have constructed their own unique sound of infectious lo-fi pop. Ready your hips cause these guys will be lighting up your dance floor soon.
