DJ Shadow has taken the bold step of using his own website as a retail store for his entire back catalogue. This marks the first time that any major label musician has offered an entire back catalog for download, directly from their own website. Fans can now obtain all of Shadow’s major label releases, as well as his early Mo’Wax recordings, in just a few clicks.
In a recent interview with URB magazine Shadow cited his reasons for the major overhaul: “You want one place on the Internet to be a source of accurate information for what you’re doing.” (I guess Wikipedia can’t suffice for all of us).
A little known fact is that Shadow has been signed to Universal since 1995, which means that Universal owns all the early obscure Mo’Wax stuff. It took more than a year for Shadow to leap through all the various legal loopholes to set something like this up.
“I basically went through all my DATs and my cassettes and my CD-Rs and pulled together a bunch of stuff that I don’t think anybody’s ever heard before. Even a radio mix I did in 1998.”
