MySpace has added a very practical feather in its cap with a new chart page, where users can see which artists are being listened to the most. The MySpace chart page features a “movers” section, which shows who is gaining popularity and who is sliding, and searches can be filtered by genre, country, and label. The beta site also offers an event calender which mirrors that of Last.fm, and a fan networking forum.
MySpace, which was bought by News Corp. for $580 million in 2005, lost a hefty percentage of its social networking appeal to Twitter and Facebook. However, the site still has a considerable lead in music related networking and artist profiling, and recently acquired social music services Imeem and iLike.
Currently, the global MySpace chart-toppers are: Owl City, Lady Gaga and KE$HA.
