Hyperdub label boss Kode9 has revealed via his Twitter feed that he is to make a contribution to the long running DJ-Kicks series. Scheduled to be released in June, further details are scant with Kode9 – real name Steve Goodman – posting a link to the album artwork and not saying much else. Hidden in shadow and darkness with bright neon colours filling the foreground, the cover is perhaps a subtle reference to his view that in recent times dubstep has been somewhat lacking in ‘colour‘.
Hyperdub first came to prominence after the release of Burial’s first album, an unexpected commercial success that allowed Goodman to take his label in exactly the direction he wanted – releasing more vinyl and developing new artists. Whether these artists will make it on to his DJ-Kicks mix is yet to be seen – a bit like Burial’s often discussed contribution to the series. Perhaps there’s a connection here somewhere…
