It’s that time of the month again where we share with you the songs that have been keeping us going on the office as we most definitely move into the summer. From hip-hop to glitch-pop we hope you enjoy sharing the songs that have sound tracked our April.
The EB Office team is: Carlos de Brito (CDB), Gareth Owen (GO), Kazim Rashid (KR), Ari Stein (AS) and Marc Zedler (MZ).

Duran Duran Duran – Face Blast

Hearing his latest effort (due in June) made me dig out my first DDD record. “Don’t you wanna be a ho’ tonight?” Well, who wouldn’t want to be a ho’ for a night at least? (GO)

L7 – Everglade
(Taken from the LP Bricks are heavy (1992) on Slash Records)
Well, I was going to put Cluster here, but the truth is I have listened to much more L7 than Cluster this month, and the rest ofour selections are pretty contemporary. L7 scared the shit out of me when I was 12 and they still do now. They fuckin’ rock tho. (GO)

Caribou – Sun
(Taken from the album Swim (2010) on City Slang)
Caribou left his 60s psych pop sound behind and created a genre bending and cross referencing monster called Swim – which for me is an early contender for the album of the year. ‘Sun’ gives you a glimpse of Caribou’s multilayered sound and I wonder of any participants of the ‘Sun’ remix contest can top the original. (CDB)

Gang Starr – Suckas Needs Bodyguards
(Taken from the album Hard To Earn (1994) on Chrysalis)
When this came out, I knew the lyrics off by heart. I could have easily chosen one out of at least 30 other tracks as a favourite. It’s still mindblowing how much amazing music Keith Elam aka Guru (Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal) gave us alongside DJ Premier as Gang Starr and as a solo artist with his Jazzmatazz project. He died, way too early, on April, 19th 2010, at only 48 years. He will be sadly missed. (CDB)

Pariah – Orpheus
(Taken from the album Detroit Falls (2010) on R&S Records)
This tune has been on a constant rewind since the day I received it. It marks a new era for seminal R&S Records as well as one of my favourite tunes to come out of the ever developing dubstep scene for a while… Massive tune from Pariah, the boy looks set for big things if this is anything to go by. (KR)

Tanya Stephens – It’s A Pity
(Taken from the album Gangsta Blues (2004) on VP Records)
This tune has been a favourite of mine ever since it was played to me by Deputy Disco in a land now far away. On first hearing, it sounds like the perfect slow-mo dancehall number, but after further inspection the lyrics are seriously sad. Not that I’m soft or anything.. .This is the kind of tune that deserves months of rewinds. (KR)

Von Spar – Scotch & Chablis
(Taken from the album Foreigner (2010) on Italic)
Von Spar hail from Cologne, probably the only new german artist in the last ten years that i’ve been legitimately excited about. It’s been a looooonng time since an artist from Germany has actually had the balls to pick up instruments and write some great songs. Like Tears for Fears frolicking with New York art collective Lansing Dreiden. This track nails every corner of the cosmic pop art framework. Addictive. Goodbye Krautrock welcome Von Spar. (AS)

Wale – Let It Loose – feat. Pharrell
(Taken from the album Attention Deficit (2010) on Universal)
Usurping the over confident Kanye is flamboyant newcomer Wale. working with mark ronson, The Neptunes and David Sitek on the album, he comes up with some rather peculiar results. Certain parts of the LP crossover into the hipster movement and back into club world. Let It Loose is catchy as hell. Watch out, there’s a New Kid on The Block and his name isn’t Donnie Wahlberg. (AS)

Tiga – Overtime
(Taken from the album Ciao! (2009) on PIAS & Turbo)
I thank iTunes’ shuffle for playing this track. Honestly, I only briefly listened to Tiga’s latest installment and figured it would be utter crap after singles ‘Beep Beep Beep’ and ‘Mind Dimension.’ But then my ears tuned to ‘Overtime’s rolling bass and its tip-toeing synths at 4:16 and I am smacked with Tiga’s buzz and eyeliner. (MZ)

Garcons – Encore l’Amour
(Taken from the album Divorce (1979) on Ze/Philips Records)
Formerly a new wave band that went disco after the departure of its drummer Gracons were mega in their heyday. Ahead of its time in all aspects this track is an enthralling disco/pop tune. Its live instruments and chorus are charming and carefree. (MZ)
