Today’s Today We Like is quite a tricky one, as we are just not sure just how much we actually like it. Those of you who have seen the recent film from street art supremo Banksy – Exit Through The Gift Shop – will understand why.
The movie begins with a wonderfully eccentric French man trying to track down the infamous Banksy, and document his life as perhaps the world’s most famous, anonymous figure and street artist. The film then takes a 180 degree turn and the film-maker becomes the subject as he masquerades as an artist and creates his first solo exhibition as Mr. Brainwash.
Those of you who have seen the film will understand our confusion and indecision concerning Mr. Brainwash and his art. Is it genius or is the complete opposite?
We recently stumbled across some pictures of Mr. Brainwash’s recent exhibition in New York during the citiy’s Design Week. His work teeters delicately between beautiful, cerebral and genius social commentary whilst also sometimes being copycat, imitation, futile and uncivilized. A bit like Banksy himself then…?
Whatever your opinions of Mr. Brainwash may be, love him or hate him, genius or fool, who really cares? His works are pretty.
