This photo, taken in Corsica by Luci Lux, shows the paving tiles of a small bar in Ponte Lecchia. The symbols on the floor should be immediately recognizable to anyone who’s ever handled a pack of cards: the spade, heart, club and diamond. You’ll be seeing the spade someplace else soon as well: the cover of Grizzly Bear’s new album Shields. While it does indeed represent a shield, it has other meanings as well. In Latin and Tarot, the Spade takes the form of a sword; when shown facing upward in a card reading it represents a conclusion or end. The Ace of Spades itself is known as the ‘death card’. It is a symbol of darkness and power. All of which makes us very curious about the album. If you’re curious too, check out our new interview with Grizzly Bear.
