This is a portrait of influential BBC demigod and serial player of records at the wrong speed John Peel. It’s created by Keira Rathbone, who calls her outsider practise typewriter art. Look closely, every marking and symbol is created by keystrokes on an old fashioned typewriter. Whether this is a comment on obsolescence in the digital age, or just a really ingenious way of “writing memory” (Rathbone can be found working on her pieces at live gigs) is tough to call. Speaking of which, John Peel’s record collection and huge body of radio shows are in the process of being made available via the internet thanks to the John Peel Centre of the Creative Arts.
