A powerful line-up, a sold-out crowd, and a laser light show were the perfect ingredients to make the Electronic Beats Festival in Prague a night to remember. Close to 3,000 fans filled Prague’s National Gallery on November 14th to experience a line-up that mixed new and established artists with DJs in-between that kept the music going until the morning hours.
Local favourites Cartonnage were the first on stage to the delight of their hometown fans. Their funky costumes, dancers and mixture of electronic and rock got the crowd warmed up and ready for an exciting night. By the end of their eleven song set, the room was packed with energetic fans.
Red Snapper took the stage next to provide a unique blend of jazz, hip-hop and electronic funk. Their instruments included a double bass and a melodica – possibly firsts for an Electronic Beats Festival. The UK-based band started their set with new track ‘Wangadoll’ and completed their performance with a mixture of material from their latest album released this year and past favourites.
The mood was elevated and the anticipation high by the time Hercules And Love Affair sprang on stage. Starting off with ‘Intro’ and finishing with ‘Hercules Theme’, their performance was fresh and full of energy. The Festival was part of their current 24-date tour that will finish at the end of the year. But even so, Prague was a special night for them. “I’m especially excited about playing with the extra lasers tonight,” said founding member Andy Butler before their performance.
Topping the line-up and winning the award for the most outfits worn during a show was the amazing Roisin Murphy. She arrived to Prague with two large wardrobe trunks, four suitcases and a reindeer made of fabric. All hands were in the air when she appeared on stage and launched into hit single ‘Overpowered’. By the second song she was already wearing outfit number three as she magically shed and replaced garments without missing a note. After playing at a whooping 41 festivals this year, she tailored her set in Prague by taking out the slower songs and making it full-on electronic. The crowds were wild with appreciation.
The Orb were next on the line-up presenting their unique sounds and innovative remixes. Founding members Alex Paterson and Youth took the stage with a five-piece ensemble and played classics such as ‘Little Fluffy Clouds’ and a stellar remix of ‘Loving You’. Their set fed directly into legendary Frenchman Mr. Oizo who took over the DJ booth and kept the crowds on their feet until almost sunrise.
EB TV was there to catch all of the action on-stage, backstage and even amongst the crowds. Check out highlights of the Electronic Beats Festival in Prague on the website soon and - if you speak Czech - the newly launched microsite www.electronicbeats.cz . The Festival will also be broadcast on Ocko TV soon.
