Peering into refrigerators across the United States, photographer Mark Menjivar got a shockingly intimate glimpse into the inner lives, and habits, of his countrymen. Titled “You are what you eat” after the famous phrase, this fascinating photo project could easily be a public service announcement. However, the Texan photographer shoots the sometimes-gnarly fridges with a refreshingly non-judgmental eye.
For the last three years, Menjivar has been documenting the contents of refrigerators in his travels across the United States, and listening to individual stories before documenting the most personal of eating habits.

Every unconventional fridge portrait (nothing added, nothing taken away) is neatly tagged with the person’s job, age, person per household and sometime the owner’s sleeping routine. While the whole story can never be fully summarized, it’s interesting to see how biographical details seem to mirror frozen contents.
