Life is full of unexpected twists and turns. Everyone grapples with life’s decisions and there is never any shortage of advice.
Typically, Gavin Nolte prides himself with his photography but recently has launched his first video installation, Crossroads (what to do). The nine-minute video is an abstract and satirical commentary on the influence of others on our life.
What we see is someone driving a car through Berlin’s Neukölln district. Echoing during the video are 27 navigational devices detailing the purported route.
Combining the 27 voices is a nerve racking and bothersome experience. Each navigational device varies in timing and tone and in turn reflects the abundant advice we hear in our life, i.e. our drive. A cacophony of sounds drowns out important information and at times is completely different from one another. Occasionally, giving even the wrong route!
It’s never easy to make the right decision, especially with the information overload surrounding us - Gavin Nolte understands that fully.
