Let the King of Pop rest in peace

Let the King of Pop rest in peace

Michael Jackson is gone. It’s strange to hear myself say that, but after 40 years of creating and inspiring, the man who laid down the blueprint for virtually every pop star prototype we live with today, has suddenly left us at the mere age of 50.

I like to think that his true genius eclipses the latter part of his controversial career, but in all honesty there will always be some dark shadows lurking around his figure. In some small way, we all had ourselves to blame for Michael Jackson’s death. In addition to the media’s incessant scrutiny of his personal life, there were times when most of us, including me, made fun of Michael’s bizarre behaviour.

But now Jackson should be allowed to rest quietly alongside the few extraordinary artists who truly defined the 20th century. He did more than that, even: He helped define music as a whole. Next to the others, Michael sits at his throne alone, quiet and sullen, in his gold sequined jacket and iconic white glove, continuing his reign over pop music.

Jackson sold a total of 750 million albums worldwide and his career included 13 Grammys as well as 13 number one singles. A musical Da Vinci of our time, an architect of modern music, a Peter Pan with true vision, he gave inspiration to millions of people, if not billions at one point, and more than anything else, left behind an outstanding body of work.

I could spend hours recounting the times I dashed to the dance floor when I heard “Beat It” or “Thriller", idled over the TV thinking, “how does he do that?” and tried to mimic his infamous groin-grabbing moves, but I feel it would be more fitting if we let the man himself and Youtube do the talking.

May you rest in peace Michael, you will be remembered forever.
