With deep minimal techno becoming a lazy byword in today’s dance scene, finding good artists in this genre gets harder and harder. But electronic critic Philip Sherburne says these guys “ somehow manage to make glitchy percussion sound fresh again” and we agree.
Kettenkarussell are a German duo made up of alter egos Leafar Legov and Herr Koreander; their name means “chain carousel” in German. They recently unleashed a sinister debut 12” titled “I Believe You and Me Make Love Forever” on the Giegling imprint, which emphasizes the outside aesthetic as much as the inside.
The 12” is a self-made cover and restricted to the first 300 records, which for greener reasons features a “recycled LP cover turned inside out and stamped in shaky lettering on the outside, a wonderful piece of minimalist, green design”.
But the four tracks that make up their EP show a tight and solid control on the typically dark but expressive Berlin sound. The cloudy and melodic “Make Me Love” and the long, exotic and industrial “You n Me” highlight the stimulating and clean sound this duo are making. If you need a reference, it’s similar in scope to the Dial records output or French wunderkid Rone.
If you have time, check out the 2.5-hour live set they posted on their MySpace.
