The next two artists couldn’t be farther apart from each other, literally: The Swiss hail from the lacklustre church state of Adelaide, South Australia while Hounds of Hate bask in the warm glow of East London’s hipster community. Both artists make retro music for the jilted millennial generation, and both have something ferociously infectious and exciting about them. The Swiss make legit revival disco and Hounds of Hate update the murky world of acid-influenced electronic music.
Disco trio The Swiss were snapped up by Australian label Modular, home to Cut Copy, Wolfmother and The Presets, and Empire of Sun’s Luke Steele liked them so much that he requested that The Swiss fill in as his permanent backing band after parting ways with cohort Nick Littlemore. They accepted.
The tracks on the band’s debut EP Movements seem destined for radio airplay: fueled by that dirty word Italo-disco and drenched with Giorgio Moroder and early Air influences, this is going to bring proper disco – not the flawed celebration of excess -- back in the right way. The EP was produced by Empire of the Sun’s Donnie Sloan, who is now working with UK disco queen Sophie Ellis Bextor. Make sure to watch out for their shimmering live show as they head out on tour with New Zealand’s Ladyhawke in November.
London’s Hounds Of Hate came to prominence via a wicked mix tape with Hype Williams. With love coming from NME, Pinglewood and Fader, all these mix cassettes have now sold out. The one-man group creates woozy synth music with a touch of malaise. With references such as Boards of Canada’s rare Acid Memories tapes, Aphex Twin’s much heralded ambient series or even Texan newcomer George Quartz, Hounds Of Hate sounds like he walked out of a time machine with an old school keyboard.
Buy Hounds of Hate here. Alternately, you could try downloading both mix tapes, not that we condone that.
