Japan-based Mule Musiq has set up a new label called ‘Endless Flight’. This label will feature releases that will crossover the borders of music. And who’s more appropriate to kick off the label’s first release, than Glasgow crossover wizards Optimo?! But different from their extraordinary and super eclectic DJ-mixes for Tigersushi or Eskimo, Jonnie Wilkes and Keith McIvor walk about in experimental minimal land. In my opinion this year’s best minimal DJ-set on CD so far. Even though this is minimalistic to the core, Optimo remain versatile and prove that there has been minimalism before techno. Starting 1979 with Industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle. Proceed with literal minimal techno by Pan Sonic, Philus or Like A Tim for instance. Slow down halfway with experimental sounds by Boris and Godsy, restart with Suicide’s hypnotic ‘Radiation’, followed by Thomas Brinkmann, Marc Houlé or Herbert amongst others and leading into an bizarre end with Black Dice! The press release says: ‘A smooth blend of music […] between Mogwai and Ricardo Villalobos’. I say simply: a must-have for curious music heads!
