The egg is a complicated object that also exists as the most basic of foods. “Space Beyond the Egg”, while equally timeless, is surprisingly devoid of comfort and simplicity but every bit as essential.

Since taking his studio outfit on the road as a three-piece band last year, Andy Meecham's Emperor Machine has seen its star rise higher and higher in the galaxy of electronic music. When Meecham released his first album, the obtusely titled "Aimee Tallulah Is Hypnotised" and swiftly followed it up with the series of 12"s that became "Vertical Tones and Horizontal Noise", The Emperor Machine was a sonic oddity in a world of ghetto bass, electro house and baile funk.

At that point, progressive electronics and keyboard noodling were only appreciated on the geekier end of the spectrum. These days, The Emperor Machine's unique approach to making music and fetishising synthesizers sits happily within modern electronic music, although it still doesn’t fit into the Holy Trinity of techno, house or electro. What originally started as a joke has now become a mainstay act for DC Recordings, and a benchmark for innovation within the genre.

The accessible “Space Beyond the Egg”, while not as inventive as its predecessors, excellently pairs gorgeous sounds and top-notch production. From the first bars of "Space Age Pop" there’s no mistaking who is creating the music here, even they are sampling ‘70s rock records. New fans will find this an excellent starting point into Meecham's world, while old fans will be gratified with "What's in the Box" and "Hairy Knuckle", but may strain for more in the vein of "Lift Up Chong and See”. With “Egg”, The Emperor Machine has ensured their longevity. It's just a shame a few geeks might have been lost along the way.
