On November 9, Berghain resident Ben Klock will be recreating the soundtrack to the fall of the Berlin Wall. The one-off event, which takes place at the Goethe Institut in London, marks not only the 20th anniversary of this historic occasion but also what managed to spring from this momentous episode in history.
Berlin is undoubtedly one of the -- if not the -- premier clubbing cities in the world, satisfying the needs of thousands of techno tourists who arrive en masse from all over the world for a party fix. But this clubbing frenzy signals more to Berliners than just euros: after the Wall was breached on November 9, 1989, techno music appeared as the clear and democratic voice of the younger generation, and helped dissolve feelings of animosity and apprehension between East and West Germans.
Ben Klock’s anniversary event is free and requires no booking. If you can’t make it, the Goethe Institute will also be showing commemorative works such as the Berlin Wall-themed documentary The Invisible Frame, starring Tilda Swinton and Cynthia Beatt.
