Mulatu Astatke + The Heliocentrics

Mulatu Astatke + The Heliocentrics

text: Remo Bitzi

For the past 40 years, Ethiopian jazz musician Mulatu Astatke has been expressing himself in collaborations with bands and fellow musicians.  But it wasn’t until Jim Jarmusch’s touching tragicomedy “Broken Flowers” came out in 2005 that Astatke’s unique jazz style began to be recognized by a wider audience.  Shortly thereafter, the collector series “Ethiopiques” devoted its fourth installment to Astatke.

Recently, the African musician teamed up with DJ Shadow-openers The Helicocentrics for a neat album called “Inspiration Information”; a piece reflecting the UK band’s hip-hop, funk, jazz, psychedelic, electronic and avante-garde background as well as Astatke’s funk, Latin, modern jazz and Ethiopian folklore-influenced compositions.

The album appears on April 9 on Strut Records; Mulatu Astatke and The Heliocentrics perform live at Cologne’s Luxor on March 28 and Berlin’s Lido on April 1st.
