A landmark copyright battle between funk visionary George Clinton and Universal Music Group came to a close this week. The 68-year-old artist was awarded $89,000 by the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, based on his phrase “bow wow wow, yippie yo, yippie yea” from the 1982 song “Atomic Dog”.
Clinton now holds the rights to all previous and future usages. The phrase in question was reportedly misused by Universal Music group Public Announcement, in their 1998 R&B song “D.O.G. in Me”, and also appears on Snoop Dogg’s track “Woof!”, which came out the same year on Priority Records.
Publishing company Bridgeport Music acted as administrator on behalf of Clinton and successfully sued Universal Music Group in a case that began in 2001. Universal Music Group appealed the decision, but the courts upheld their verdict, in a major coup for songwriters and musicians.
