Skweee genre marked with documentary

A revealing documentary about a new and unique subgenre from Scandinavia has been put together, entitled We Are Skweee. Sounding like a hybrid of 8-bit and IDM music, Skweee music was best described by Clash magazine as “Scandinavian R&B”.

Skweee was founded on the use of vintage synthesisers; the name apparently comes from the process of trying to “squeeze” the most interesting sounds out of a module. The genre is taken very seriously and is complimented by an official site, the Nation of Skweee , a compilation entitled Skweee Tooth, and now the documentary from Italian director Iacopo Patierno.

We Are Skweee gets knee deep in the genre, following artists from the suburbs of Stockholm to Helsinki, Finland and Barcelona’s Sonar festival, where eight Swedish and Finnish acts were chosen to represent the scene.

Oddly enough, there seems to be a growing kinship between the dubstep sound and Skweee artists in Scandinavia, with another genre called Wonky arising from both movements.
