A quiet but dynamic shift is occurring in the online music industry - a symbiotic union has formed between The Hype Machine and Soundcloud.
The link up seems to be an ideal marriage, as it will simplify the process of finding fresh new music - something both sites currently do, by making the Soundcloud audio player detectable by the Hype Machine’s music aggregator. Bloggers can simply cut and paste the embed code saving valuable time while, artists and labels will have access to stream analytics. This results in better categorization, from more legitimate sources.
What makes the union even more interesting is that it demonstrates a continued trend from push to pull practices. Though, for this system to really work labels need to jump on the bandwagon and embrace Soundcloud à la network effect.
If they labels release legitimate streams prior to pirated material, then they effectively beat the pirates at their own game. Unsurprisingly, it is trendsetting indie music label Domino Recordings leading the push. Home to Animal Collective, Junior Boys and Four Tet, a streaming arrangement is already in place, and with a bit of luck other labels will follow suit.
