A new documentary entitled “Speaking in Code” will surely shed some much-needed light on the murky world of electronic music. Directed, researched and labored on for over five years by San Franciscan Amy Grill, “Speaking In Code” is a “vérité glimpse into the world of techno.” With commentary from techno stalwarts such as Earplug editor Philip Sherburne and Grill herself, this ambitious expose features artists ranging from Ellen Allien, Akufen, Wighnomy Brothers, Sascha Funke and Monolake. The soundtrack is provided by Modeselektor, The Field, Gui Boratto and Superpitcher, amongst others.

Here’s why it’s different than others of its genre: “Speaking In Code” is one of the first films that ventures to explain why so many people love this genre of music, in an intimate, almost philosophical manner. As told by veteran raver and first-time director Amy Grill, this movie addresses (in Sherburne’s words): “the nexus of subculture, technology and of desire -- the desire to have a shared secret.”

“Speaking In Code” premiers at Boston’s Independent Film festival on April 23, 2009.
