Tri-Sound launches with epic Northern Soul tune

What do you get when you combine three music industry veterans with a penchant for a Brit-style American soul music and a vintage Swedish recording studio loaded with original equipment? You get the label Tri-Sound, and their debut release “Mercy” by The Third Degree, a brilliant re-imagining of last year’s Duffy hit.

Marshall Chess, Eddie Piller and Fredrik Ekander are the three industry players who have launched Tri-Sound, having left behind various label management and A&R positions to follow their true passion: Real soul music. Aiming to develop new artists, but with an eye on the past, Tri- Sound will also be releasing an album by Noel McKoy, the former vocalist of the James Taylor Quartet.

“Mercy” is a Northern Soul song in the best tradition, backed up with an instrumental version and an extended edit by mixmaster Greg Wilson. It tops Duffy's original many times over, and if I didn't know that this was a new production, I could easily be convinced it was a lost soul treasure from the backwaters of America. It begs the question, “why has no one done this before?”
