WMF closes

Rumours have been circulating in the last few days, but now it’s official; Berlin’s WMF club will be closing. In what is a sad blow for the city’s nightlife, the club has closed with immediate effect. WMF was amongst the best, known of the original Berlin techno clubs along with Tresor and E-Werk, re-launching itself to much fanfare last year after a 4 year hiatus.

Some events seem to have found new homes - Compost Black Label night has moved its March 19th party to Weekend, and clubbers remain defiant having rallied behind WMF with a Facebook group.

In WMF’s short second life a courageous and innovative booking policy was established that sought to break up the constant barrage of techno & house. However, large crowds for major events such as Hardwax’s 20th Birthday did not equate to regular club goers - there were other evenings that failed to fill any of the dance floors.

With a history of switching venues, some have suggesting that the pause between Café Moskau /Sommerlager and the current location killed the chances of creating any kind of regular crowd. That maybe true, but its still sad news in a city dominated by clubbing and nightlife.
