Blaktroniks were founded in 1996 by Detroit-based Eddie Patrick Smith and his friend Perception from Minneapolis. Their idea was to create an artistic platform for themselves and like-minded artists in Oakland.
Blaktroniks address contemplation, self-discovery, asylum and sophisticated retreats in hostile environments, with a sound reminiscent of early Jungle Brothers or Madlib. They’ve denounced Flavor Flav for his post-Public Enemy sellout attitude and use samples from A Tribe Called Quest.
The sound spectrum of Blaktroniks varies from British-orientated ultra-low breakbeats to club compatible tracks in the deep house vein.
Pee does not think of Blaktroniks as a retro soul project. As he’s always said: "don’t imitate your parents past - create your own generation of memories."
Luckily, they found a home for their unique and idiosyncratic sound at Heidelberg, Germany’s Rubaiyat/Phazz-a-Delic label, were they released the critically acclaimed album "Mechanized Soul" in 2008.
