Gus Gus - Shape shifting Icelanders / Electronic Beats Radio

Gus Gus--Session for Electronic Beats Radio, 2009-10

Gus Gus

Shape shifting Icelanders

Gus Gus was formed in 1995 as a loose network of actors, designers, musicians and DJs. The name was inspired by the Fassbinder film “Angst essen Seele auf”, in which the protagonist pronounced the name of the Moroccan dish “cous cous” in a charmingly soft way.

At first, the 9-person collective cultivated their style by combining elements of rock, jazz, downtempo and techno. Then, in 1997 Gus Gus released their first album and later, the single “Ladyshave”, which catapulted them into the public sphere. In the last decade, the now three-person group, made up of Daniel Agust, Birgir Porarinsson and Stephan Stephensen, has focussed on club-oriented sounds that lie comfortably between techno, house, pop and electronica. Copious remix requests from Björk, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Sigur Ros, Moonbootica and Peter Kruder’s side project Tosca have all been completed with panache.

Despite their dancefloor focus Gus Gus have always been reinventing their sound whilst cultivating an organic character. The band’s live shows promoting their new album “24/7” have received rave reviews, and to sweeten the waiting time, tune in to Stephan “President Bongo” Stephensen’s mix for Electronic Beats Radio.
