Margaret Dygas

Deep, dubby and minimal

Life as Margaret Dygas experienced it had more than a few unusual twists and turns. With a childhood that began in Poland, at age 11 she relocated to Germany with her family before moving to San Jose, California. In the late ‘80s, the music young Dygas was surrounded by and adhered to was old-school hip hop: there were house parties every weekend and copious amounts of chillin' in the backyard.

Her discovery of house music began in New York in the early ‘90s, when she moved to Manhattan to attend classes at the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology. Before long, Dygas’ college friends introduced her to the city’s underground club scene, dressed-up Twilo club kids, intimate basement techno nights, smoke-filled jungle gatherings and scores of insane house parties.

Captivated by the British dance scene, Dygas picked up and moved to London in the summer of 1999. Her first night job there was at the door of Home, while her day job was as a make-up artist. Soon, she began playing out at parties and warming up clubs.

It was only four years ago that Dygas decided make DJing her full-time career. Her wide musical background made her keen to experiment with new sounds and styles, from dub to techno and everything and anything in between. Since that definitive decision, Dygas has been a fixture on London's electronic scene, playing at clubs such as Fabric, The End/AKA and The Key. She was a resident at label night Underline and has supported growing underground parties such as Multi Vitamins, Run, Stink at the T Bar,Technique in Leeds and Minimallondon.com events. She was part of the Crosstown Rebels mini-tour last year and clocked in time at Ibiza, playing Monza at Space in 2006, and Privilege in 2007.

Her music has been so well received in Germany that she moved to Berlin in 2006. Currently, she is a familiar face at clubs like Panorama Bar, where she holds a monthly residency, Arena, Watergate and her favourite summertime haunt: Club der Visionäre. Other towns in Germany also hold a special place in her heart -- Dygas also has residencies at Heimatmelodie in Essen, Dortmund and Düsseldorf.

In 2006, Dygas made her first move into production, leading to her “Day After” release on Contexterrior in 2007. Two digital-only releases on Harry Klein Networks "Only Painted" (2007) and "Roses Are Red" (2008) elicited incredible feedback. In 2008, Dygas was seduced by the secrets and possibilities of analogue sound production - so she teamed up with Tobias Freund from Sieg über die Sonne and NSI and released "See You Around" on Freund’s Non Standard Productions label.
