Pantha Du Prince--Mix for Electronic Beats Radio, 2008-02

Pantha Du Prince

A Master Of Ambiguity

Hendrik Weber's current and probably most influential project is "Pantha Du Prince". In 2003, he released a radically different debut album; "Diamond Daze", an album that combines pure physicality with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the more forgotten corners of Indie, Rock, New Wave and Techno music. Though you will find some references (Detroit Techno, Theo Parrish, Moodyman, Acid etc ) to the basic blocks of electronic club music, peels back to reveal another.

After remixes for Depeche Mode, Phantom/Ghost, Animal Collective and Raz O´Hara comes "This Bliss" - a record that exists at both the heart and at the boundaries of House and Techno music. It was produced here and there, on trips, while visiting friends, on the train, the airplane or when travelling between Hamburg, Berlin, New York and an old Parisian monastery. Weber’s second album as Pantha Du Prince can rightly be called nomadic.

Here Weber deliberately employs ambiguity to blur the edges of technology and communication, thus keeping the heart of "This Bliss" constantly in motion. Moments of peace and tranquillity are hard to find, even if the bass drum is not the boss anymore. "This Bliss" sounds like a trip to the end of the world (and the night); the sound bites either ramify in dreamy ornaments or disperse in glittering sound sparks.

Though he wanders between the Avant-garde and the rush and excitement of the dance floor, Weber is reluctant to fulfil expectations for instant excitement. It is all about this sudden un-programmed bliss, about existing in the musical moment. Something Marx would call the "Kingdom of Freedom".

So here we have one of Pantha Du Prince’s famous DJ sets. Melodic experimental Techno meets Detroit House meets melancholic moodiness. Driving and euphoric in its expression, this mix perfectly sums up the Pantha Du Prince Sound. Where he’s at, where he is from and where he is going on his aural adventures. A new world to discover, as eclectic as it is danceable. We defy you not to be seduced…
