Munich’s Pitchben knows a thing or two about the insinuating power of a pitch-bent synth. A precociously early starter – he first got behind a set of decks aged 13 – he was crowned German DMC Champion before shifting his focus to sound design. With this kind of pedigree you can rest assured that he doesn’t deal in trite, half-remembered nostalgia signifiers that usually come thick and fast when a DJ starts bigging up the 80s. Instead he uses the pioneering and distinctive DNA of that particular decade (booming drums, lacquered tones and the kind of polish that comes inch-thick) and teases the sonics into something, yes, fresh.
On this mix, taken from EB Radio earlier this year, Pitchben sculpts an exclusive party primed electro funk set that will have you busting out the dry ice and Wayfarers in no time. 100% irony free, yeah?
