Editors’ Choice: June 29, 2013

Rather than operate as a music news source, Electronic Beats operates as a music information source. We want to share with you; we want you to know what we’re hearing, what’s reverberating our cochleas and sending broader vibrations throughout our bodies, and by extension our audio-addled souls. Down with that? Welcome to Editors’ Choice.

Lil Jabba – “Maven”

This track taken from Lil Jabba’s upcoming album on Local Action is a good example of what makes his take on footwork freneticism unique, incorporating electronica melodicism for contrast.

Ellery James Roberts – “Kerou’s Lament”

The sudden dissolution of Wu Lyf last year has proven to be the gift that keeps giving. First to regroup was the crooked disco set Los Porcos, but now ex-Wu Lyf’s frontman throws his hat in the ring with this frankly ridiculous sounding track. It samples both Lil B’s “I’m God” and Daniel Pinchbeck’s “Planetary Initiation” lecture. Pretentious as all hell, then, but great with it.

Angel Haze – “Initiation”

According to a tweet Angel Haze is just putting the finishing touches on her long-awaited album Dirty Gold. Above you’ve the chance to listen to the second pre-released track from the Michigan-born rapper following “No Bueno”.

The Bug – “Freakshow” feat. Danny Brown and Kiki Hitomi

Great new track from Kevin Martin aka The Bug, topped with vocals from Detroit rapper Danny Brown. I can’t wait for The Bug’s full forthcoming Filthy EP, due to drop in Autumn.

Pazes – “Frozen” feat. Biblo

Dreamy pop melodies combined with tech-dub sensibilities make Lucas Febraro’s debut album Sleeping Dolls a beautiful summer pleasure, with just the right touch of melancholy to keep it from being too much like a commercial jingle for cardigans or something. Gorgeous vocals via Istanbul’s Biblo make it all the more body-melting.

Youth Code – “Tiger’s Remorse”

Off their new 7-inch “Keep Falling Apart”. I love these kids, and every time they put out another track of stomping, brutal EBM I’m on it quicker than you can say “VNV who?”

Frank Ocean – “Feel California” (live in Munich, June 26th)

An incredible vocal performance and his modest, at times even shy smile made girls scream and (some) boys freeze in awe! This fan footage of Frank Ocean’s Munich show in BMW Welt is of indifferent quality but gives a hint to what might come next. “Feel California” (working title) opened the show, which—safe to say—will end up on many year end lists, including my own.

Dürerstuben – “Sheets of Rane”

I don’t know if this refers to Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer but all I say is fold your fucking hands!

Shift Key – “Straight To The Bank” (Shift-Key Money Grabbin Edit)

Young, London based DJ/Producer Shift Key has just been signed by Columbia records, quite probably due to his furious output of increasingly popular funky dubstep, garage and trap mixes. Keep your eyes on this one!
