In 2007, Irena Schulz uploaded a video to YouTube of her cockatoo Snowball dancing to “Everybody” by the Backstreet Boys. It became a huge viral sensation, and since then, countless videos of animals rocking out to music have appeared online. But there hasn’t been any real scientific research on the topic—until now.

Quant Magazine is reporting on a study by two scientists from the Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla, California. After testing Snowball in a series of controlled experiments, John Iversen and Aniruddh Patel are claiming that the bird actually does understand rhythm.
