One of the most fascinating aspects of Detroit techno’s immense history is how a prodigious group of musicians in one American city made its flight across the Atlantic and inspired a whole other continent of artists attempting to make their first steps in the burgeoning genre. So when in 1990 A Guy Called Gerald flew to Detroit after personally requesting Derrick May‘s help on some tracks, an awesome feedback loop of inspiration and cultural exchange was born. This clip traces their encounters with one another in the studio and how they worked on music that Derrick described as being like an uncut “diamond…a rough, beautiful piece of art work.”

Read on about how Derrick May was also a fundamental mentor to Stacey Pullen here, and check out stunning photos from pioneering Detroit musicians here.
