A trailer for a student documentary about the history and development of Glasgow’s underground house and techno scene—aptly titled The Glasgow Underground Music Scene—surfaced earlier this week, and it looks like it’s got a few kinks to work out before it hits the big screen. According to the description on YouTube, the film is a university project and aims to “tackle the deep roots of the underground music scene and explore how the city established its characteristic ‘Glasgow Sound,'” but judging from the cuts provided in the preview, said history doesn’t include very many women. There are a few shots of women DJing presumably at local clubs, but none of the interview subjects in the clip are female.

The video and its description also draw attention to Glasgow’s similarities to Detroit and Berlin, two cities that have an established historical relationship and exchange that parties on both sides have nurtured, including the local government in the American techno mecca. Speakers in the clip point out that Glasgow is also a post-industrial city that harbored an exciting rave scene in disused spaces in the ’90s. And we’re definitely interested to hear more about that.
