Haven’t you always thought that a banana would make a fantastic MIDI controller?

No? Well, this London design studio did, and the results are pretty out there.

The “Ototo” is a white circuit board that can connect up to 12 touch sensors to  any conductive surface. When the surface is touched, it sends pulses that can then be used to trigger pitch, note data and even filter cut-offs. You can even use Ototo with Ableton Live to trigger patterns and sequences. Now you can build your own customized MIDI controller prototypes with any number of objects lying around the house.

With this fascinating new technology, it would seem that the days of mundane black-and-white key and drum pad MIDI controllers are finally numbered.

Read more about other unlikely MIDI controllers: knits, lights and McDonald’s placemats.
