There’s trouble brewing in the Unicode Consortium. The organization, originally tasked with developing standards for translating alphabets into code, has been grappling with the recent popularity of emoji. The ideograms have become something of a flagship product for the group, and that’s apparently hampering the work of the more scholarly minded side of the organization. Because, really, who cares about encoding obscure and underpriviledged languages when you can spend your time creating cute cartoon croissants, pancakes and salads?
