Punk helped give women a stronger voice in mainstream music, yet many of these women have remained undocumented in a meaningful way—until Zillah Minx’s excellent documentary She’s A Punk Rocker UK. As the singer of legendary underground anarcho band Rubella Ballet, Minx had firsthand experience in the rise (and eventual consumption by the larger media machine) of England’s original punk scene. That gives the interviews in this feature—which include, among others, X-Ray Spex’ Poly Styrene, Gaye Advert of The Adverts, Poison Girls frontwoman Vi Subversa, and Crass’ Eve Libertine and Gee Vulture—an intimacy and friendliness that’s lacking in many such documentaries. It’s a fantastic watch, and now that the group have uploaded the whole thing to their Youtube, you can enjoy it for free (though you should definitely support them with a purchase if you have the extra scratch).
