Is This The World's First Commercially Available Synthesizer?

Forget about Bob Moog and Don Buchla, there’s a new contender for world’s first commercially available synthesizer. Well, sort of: The Novachord, developed and distributed by Hammond in the ’40s, is a “vacuum tube-oscillator” keyboard that’s considered to be a direct predecessor of the analog synthesizer.

And now you can check out one of these rare instruments for yourself at music retailer Sweetwater’s GearFest trade show in Fort Wayne, Indianapolis—a dedicated local has spent 2,000 hours to beautifully restore one example from 1941.

Head over to Sweetwater’s website to check out a photo gallery of this rare instrument.
