Far Side Virtual
James Ferraro
There are many in the world of experimental music and noise who view their work as trash. If it is anti-music, then why not embrace the concept of "quantity over quality"? (Without wanting to cause a slagging match here, I will clarify my position in that I think it is GOOD and I am VERY GUILTY of it myself). However I've noticed this methodology starting to filter through other genres outside of the world of noise. Look at Lil B's impressive 600+ song 'Myspace Collection', Mater Suspiria Vision's constant psychotronic witch-house output and The Skaters Californian tape saturated freak outs. James Ferraro is one half of The Skaters, soloing his output as a stoner drone, jungle-quest psychedelia merchant under his name and a ton of others equally as prolific as the group. I can't tell if he spreads himself too thin; his album 'Far Side Virtual' is just too damn weird to comment on accurately. It is equal parts Vangelis' China played on casiotones as it is Trout Mask Replica but somehow not nearly as pleasurable as the former or as much of a headfuck as the latter.I thought the use of the skype login sound was pretty amusing as I did turn to my friend and yell βcan you stop logging into fucking skype! I'm trying to write something!β But it's fun. Life should be fun. If someone was ever thinking of trying to sync it to the 1986 film 'Chopping Mall' I think it would work well. Just don't try to understand it.
