Sepalcure
Sepalcure, the project of Machinedrum's Travis Stewart and Percussion Lab head-honcho Praveen Sharma, have been tearing up the world of bass music with their self-titled debut. Sepalcure is a gorgeous tapestry of various influences, ranging from garage to '90s-influenced house, overlayed with chopped and stretched vocal samples. This is the sort of thing that's been done to death by now, but the NYC duo keep it fresh and inspired; the jittery grime-influenced paranoia of 'Yuh Nuh See', the 8-bit ascension that creeps throughout the heart-breakingly lovely 'Eternally Yrs', the anthemic, late-night radio pulse of 'The One'...all contain elements that have been done before, but somehow Sepalcure make us hear it like it's the first time.
With such a diverse range of sounds, reviews of Sepalcure throw around words like 'future bass', 'post-dubstep', and 'now rave'. We just call it 'beautiful'. Too often dance music is churned out for the sole purpose of filling floors, but this wonderful debut goes straight for the soul, making it ache for sweet release. if you've ever felt that electronic music was a dying beast, Sepalcure will crush that notion under a flurry of beats that will leave you breathless. This one's essential.
