The Night
Star Eyes
Vivian Host knows that diversity is the key to throwing a real party. Every release the Trouble & Bass queen drops under her Star Eyes moniker feels fresh, of-the-moment, and richly varied in sound. Her latest single 'The Night' and it's three accompanying remixes are no exception.
On the original mix, the pulsating snap of the bass skips heavily over light singsong vocals, a slow-grind slice of discofied night. It's sultry like Elvira, a bit cheesy and a bit naughty. Hostage's remix takes it down the '92-era rave route, with twinkling pianos and a eurotrash-kuduro vibe that made me sweat in my seat. Yes, it was pretty gross and weird and I hope my co-workers don't smell my sweatchair when I'm not around. I'm pretty into Deathface and already featured his remix a few weeks ago, and it's still my favorite of the bunch. Adding dirty drilling stabs and a galloping drumstep beat to Host's chopped vocals, Johnny Love creates a methodical rager and reminds me once again why he's one of my current favorite remixers. Bad Looks finishes it off with a wobbly, wonky remix packing some seriously sinister bass.
While I would like to see more from Host herself (especially in the vein of the skittering grime banger 'Ride or Die' off her previous EP White Glove) The Night is thoroughly satisfying for anyone who appreciates late-nite dancefloor sleaze, and essential for any DJ looking to create some.
