How Ambient Music Is Used To Make Hospital Patients Happier

Ambient music has surprisingly healing properties.

Think of a list of relaxing places for a minute. We bet you a few imaginary, non-existent dollars that “Intensive Care Unit” and “hospital” were not the first words that came to mind. Despite that, these admittedly stressful spaces are getting a dose of much needed relaxation thanks to a new project by an ambient group called Darkroom.

Aiming to relieve the stress of ICU psychosis—a terrifying situation where patients become overwhelmed by paranoid thoughts—, the group lets patients and staff tune in to live improvised performances via iPad.

The first performance took place at the Critical Care Unit of University College Hospital, London. Taking cues from Brian Eno and British artist Victoria Hume, the performance was described by one patient as “fucking trippy.” We can only hope he meant that in the best way possible.
