“Disc Rot” is a puzzling and common problem that plagues the CD format. In fact, it’s such a problem that historians and archivists who once relied on the medium are worried. The American Library of Congress has published a fact-sheet that explores this mysterious digital decay.

When compact discs hit the market in the early ’80s, it was assumed that we’d collectively entered a golden era of indestructible mass storage convenience. Unfortunately, that promise has not exactly play out very well.
