Berlin Finally Has Its Own Vinyl Pressing Plant Again

The plant will focus on servicing smaller independent labels.

Last year was a landmark year for vinyl. People bought more records in 2016 than they have for 25 years, and the industry is projected to be a billion dollar business by the end of 2017. But while the raw numbers are remarkable, it has largely been major-label reissues and releases driving the numbers forward. The market in general might be expanding, but smaller independent labels are selling less than ever.

A new vinyl pressing company in Berlin is hoping to change all that. Located in the Berlin neighborhood of Marienfelde, intakt! is run by vinyl obsessives Max Gössler and Alexander Terboven. The pressing plant was created to explicitly serve the demand of independent and smaller record labels that have been crowded out by major labels during the vinyl boom. That is, labels who usually press limited runs of 300-400 records will finally have a plant that gives their pressing needs preference. This will lead to better turnaround speeds for new independent records being pressed, meaning that all those long-awaited records end up on your turntable at home faster. To learn more about intakt!, click here.
