Explore The World's Folk Songs With This Beautiful Interactive Map

This is what a map of living sound looks like.

Have you always wished you could explore the world’s diverse musical cultures from the comfort of your office chair? If so, say no more, as the newly launched Global Jukebox lets you do exactly that. It’s an in-depth yet intuitive site that lets you sift through famed folklorist Alan Lomax’s huge archive of folk music from around the globe.

The Global Jukebox’s mission statement is to pay “tribute to the expressive styles of all peoples within the framework of cultural equity and the diversity which is crucial to our survival as a species.” It includes an interactive map spanning musical cultures as diverse as the peoples of Lake Sentani in Micronesia to the folk music of the Eastern Steppes in Central Asia. Beyond being extremely informative, it’s also a lot of fun to use. Check it out here.
