This Lo-Fi Cover Of Aphex Twin's

The cover was recorded with only one synthesizer and a modified tape recorder.

Aphex Twin’s music hardly encourages covers. Richard D. James’ sophisticated and fluid composition style—not to mention the sheer brilliance of his sound design—makes an innocent bedroom cover a rather daunting proposition.

Nevertheless,  Reddit user “my-tape-music” took the challenge head on, and his adaptation of  “Alberto Balsam” from I Care Because You Do is surprisingly impressive—not least because of the limited means that the musician uses. The whole track is made exclusively with a Critter&Guitari synthesizer and a modified tape recorder.

The cassette recorder has been modified so that the “wow” and “flutter” of the machine creates an unstable, almost-broken pitch sound. It only adds to the mournful quality of the track, which, despite its DIY approach, captures the spirit of the originally admirably well. Talk about making the best of what you have.
