RIP William Onyeabor—Listen To The Nigerian Disco Pioneer's Only Interview

This interview with the late Nigerian pioneer offers a glimpse into his mysterious world.

Influential Nigerian disco producer William Onyeabor died today. Working primarily in the ’70s, he developed a unique synth-funk sound that stood out in Nigeria’s then-thriving music scene. Though not originally widely known outside of his native country, he gained widespread attention thanks to David Byrne, who released a compilation of Onyeabor’s material titled, Who Is William Onyeabor? And, indeed, many people have asked that question since it’s release. Despite his influence, Onyeabor the man long remained a mystery after he converted to Christianity in 1985. Thankfully, he opened up to BBC 6 in a wide ranging interview that can be heard here.
