Some lovely folks over on the Reddit EDM production board have reminded us that the small matter of a couple of thousand $s/€s shouldn’t get between you and learning the principles of modular synthesis. Minimal budget? Not to fear—both Sonigen and Kamioooka are entirely free and will get you CV-triggering in no time. For something slightly more upmarket, you can try Bazille and the freshly launched Softube plugin (which we reported on last month) for your DAW for $129 and $99 respectively. That’s a small price to pay for the years you will spend deep in the intricacies and frustrations of the instrument.

Of course, there’s always the option to play a modular synth in your browser. And if you do have the money to get a physical synth, we’ve got a handy guide to help you integrate its capabilities into your music.

If you want more insight into the changing face of the modular synthesizer industry you can read our review of Superbooth 2016 here.
