Techno Could Soon Be Taught Alongside Math In British Schools
Music class sure has come a long way…
Do you remember music lessons at school? Back in our day we used to play the recorder (badly) and sing along to “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Music as taught in school rarely reflects what kids are actually listening to. This is a missed opportunity according to Pete Dale who has penned a piece for The Conversation about his experiences working with youths in the North East of England.
Noticing that some kinds were passionately engaged in a high-octane dance music called makina, he realized the untapped potential in children who had been otherwise written off. “Engaging pupils with music they know and love is one way to make school feel more familiar and more welcoming. And it could even help to change a few stereotypes about what types of people listen to what types of music in the process.” We just wish our school days were a bit more like that!
