Watch How Rave Influenced Russian Streetwear Icon Gosha Rubchinskiy

“Initially we looked for proud, rough-looking guys, but in the end it changed to ‘rave nerds’.”

When fashion designer Gosha Rubchinsky was starting to conceive his Spring/Summer 2018 collection, he didn’t have to look too far afield for inspiration. Rather than take his cues from the endlessly mythologized “birth of rave” stories from London, Berlin or Ibiza, the Russian designer looked back at the unique rave culture that exploded in the Saint Petersburg underground in the ’90s.

Rubchinsky has already documented this moment in post-Soviet history in a zine that accompanied his new collection. Now, as part of a new episode ofGlobal Street Style, the leading proponent of club-inspired street couture sat down to discuss how he reimagined a ’90s club for his SS2018 show, the influence of history on the present, and what it means to belong to post-Soviet culture. You can watch this worthwhile 15 minute mini-documentary on the modern Russian fashion movement below.
