Videodrome 144: This month’s best videos

Every month Moritz Gayard sorts through a deluge of new music videos—so you don’t have to.

#1 Cosmin TRG – “Repetitiv”, directed by Cosmin Nicolae, Tony Fiori

Banger from Romanian-born Cosmin TRG, off his recent “A Universal Crush” EP. Also nice: the dark slow-mo imagery fits perfectly and makes me want to move.

#2 Santigold – “Kicking Down Doors“, directed by Andy Morahan

Oh, Santi. Where is all the L.E.S.Artistes-vibe gone? These days Santi is in bed with Pepsi and Yogi and just dropped this overloaded video. Not sure what to make of it.

#3 Kitty B – “Marijuana”, directed by Shomi Patwary & Kitty

CANNABIS IS NOT A CRIME.

#4 Kiesza – “Giant In My Heart”

Kiesza – Giant In My Heart (2014)

Pretty neat. If we would live in the year 1992. Some sort of Sidney Youngblood joined forces with La Bouche.

#5 Leisure Birds – “W A V E F O R M S”, directed by Matt Bardins

Achtung guitars! In this trippy, little video Minneapolis-based Leisure Birds show the path to the world of sci-fi garage.

#6 Ab-Soul – “Stigmata”, directed by Dave Free

Jesus x Desert x Post-Hop: short clip to reveals the album cover and release date for “These Days…” Get ready.

#7 ShowYouSuck – “Gucci Mane III”, directed by ShowYouSuck & Aaron Perkins Jr

Polka dot around the world. Just in case you live under a rock: ShowYouSuck is releasing five videos for his single “Gucci Mane”. We’ve already seen two, here he teams up with APJ Films for the third installment.

#8 Wild Beasts – “Mecca”, directed by Kate Moross

Honestly I am not a sucker for the Wild Beasts, but I do respect their care in the field of music videos. They dropped this nice animated music video for ‘Mecca’, the third single to be taken from the band’s fourth album. Good work, Kate.

#9 DyE feat. Egyptian Lover – “She’s Bad”, directed by Dent de Cuir

Video for for French music producer Juan de Guillebon, AKA Dye composed by Dent de Cuir, a duo of filmakers hailing from Paris and Montreal. Am with Egyptian Lover, btw.

#10 How to Dress Well – “Childhood Faith In Love”

Here comes the conclusion to Tom Krell’s “What Is This Heart” trilogy. In this installment he catches up with the protagonists as they wander through the desert following the events of “Repeat Pleasure” and “Face Again.”

#11 Little Dragon – “Pretty Girls”

Unsettling new video for Little Dragon’s „Pretty Girls“ taken from their recent LP Nabuma Rubberband. If you are into disturbing kidnapping, graveyards and zombies watching this video will be heaven for you.

#12 Ibeyi – “Oya”

This is special. 19 year-old twin sisters from France, Ibeyi are freshly signed on the (almost) ever-inspiring XL label and have their first haunting video out. Watch up top, this is special.

#13 JJ – “All White Everything“, directed by Olivia Kastebring

JJ‘s new album, V, will be out in August via Secretly Canadian/Sincerely Yours. As an appetizer he serves the video for “All White Everything” – and unsurprisingly, it’s shot in all white.

#14 Liars – “Pro Anti Anti”, directed by Yoona Park

‘Pro Anti Anti’ is the latest single taken from Liars’ new album MESS – out NOW on Mute. Made with a little help of 3D-technology company Direct Dimensions.

#15 Goldfrapp – “Jo”, directed by Lisa Gunning

Goldfrapp have shared the mysterious, dark video for their latest single, “Jo”, one of the highlights of their latest album, Tales of Us, directed by Lisa Gunning.

#16 FKA TWIGS – “two weeks”, directed by Nabil

British vocalist FKA Twigs shares the video for the album’s first single, “Two Weeks”. The track is a minimal approach with electronic pop textures accentuating her silky vocals. Nice bass and really dirty lyrics.

#17 THE ROOTS – “Never“, directed by Dano Cerny

The Roots have released a haunting new clip for their track “Never,” which appears on their most recent album. Check Director Dano Cerny nicely made overhead shots.
